“觀音”是徐悲鴻創(chuàng)作中最罕見(jiàn)、最高等級(jí)的題材之一，在他繪畫(huà)生涯中極不輕易為他人所作，相較于奔馬、雄獅等常見(jiàn)主題，目前所見(jiàn)其存世觀音作品僅六件，文獻(xiàn)記載有四件。本件作品創(chuàng)作于1937年的觀音誕辰日，是悲鴻具有開(kāi)創(chuàng)意義的首件觀音題材作品。本幅《白描觀音造像》也是悲鴻筆下唯一一幅全側(cè)身觀音像，構(gòu)圖造像獨(dú)特。觀音題材徐悲鴻僅為極重要之人，或在極重要場(chǎng)合才會(huì)創(chuàng)作。據(jù)載，徐悲鴻曾在1939年，作觀音像三幅，一為中國(guó)抗戰(zhàn)之陣亡將士祈福，二為他在新加坡時(shí)期重要贊助人黃曼士所作，三為弘一法師弟子廣洽法師所作，上款人級(jí)別非常之高。此外，在1938年，徐悲鴻曾繪觀音像，獻(xiàn)給紅顏知己孫多慈的母親，盼望能成全他和孫多慈的姻緣，雖事與愿違，但可見(jiàn)觀音這一神圣宗教題材，對(duì)徐悲鴻具有特殊的意義。本幅《白描觀音造像》的上款人地位非同一般，乃民國(guó)時(shí)期廣西省政府主席黃旭初之母覃氏，但由于經(jīng)歷了特殊時(shí)期，上款“黃老伯母”已被挖去。此畫(huà)源自黃旭初親屬后人，自悲鴻完成后一直藏于黃氏家中，數(shù)十年從未公開(kāi)，藏者視若珍寶，原裝原裱。而今正值徐悲鴻先生誕辰百卅年之際，此畫(huà)作為悲鴻與桂系重要人物私交往來(lái)的重要見(jiàn)證，抗戰(zhàn)時(shí)期藝術(shù)與政治交織互動(dòng)的最好呈現(xiàn)，今終得以面世，誠(chéng)乃幸事。黃旭初是“新桂系”首領(lǐng)之一，與李宗仁、白崇禧合稱(chēng)“廣西三杰”，自1931年起，連任廣西省主席十九年，被稱(chēng)為“廣西大管家”。二十世紀(jì)三十年代初，徐悲鴻多次赴廣西，與桂系軍政人物交往密切。1936年5月，徐悲鴻被聘為廣西政府顧問(wèn)，6月他離開(kāi)南京前往廣西，受到李宗仁、白崇禧、黃旭初等人的禮遇。1937年之際，徐悲鴻居住在李宗仁為他安排的居所，幾乎每天中午到省府內(nèi)用餐，經(jīng)常與時(shí)任省主席的黃旭初同桌進(jìn)餐。廣西政要們的推崇讓徐悲鴻倍感榮幸，于是在1937年春，徐悲鴻繪制巨幅油畫(huà)《廣西三杰》（徐悲鴻紀(jì)念館藏，即李宗仁、白崇禧、黃旭初騎馬像），以報(bào)禮遇之情。黃旭初為人孝順，晚年著《我的母親》回憶錄，西泠印社2010秋拍曾釋出一件徐悲鴻《獻(xiàn)壽圖》，此畫(huà)創(chuàng)作于1936年冬，上款“黃老伯母”正是黃旭初之母覃氏，與本幅《白描觀音造像》為同一上款，且兩件作品創(chuàng)作時(shí)間相隔不久，可見(jiàn)這一時(shí)期徐悲鴻與黃旭初往來(lái)密切?？箲?zhàn)全面爆發(fā)后，徐悲鴻以藝術(shù)投身救國(guó)運(yùn)動(dòng)，黃旭初作為地方主政者亦倡導(dǎo)文藝抗戰(zhàn)，徐悲鴻與黃旭初的往來(lái)，前者借廣西舞臺(tái)踐行藝術(shù)救國(guó)理想，后者以文化政策提升地方軟實(shí)力，這種合作在抗戰(zhàn)洪流中交織出藝術(shù)與政治共擔(dān)民族大義的獨(dú)特篇章。徐悲鴻本不輕易作白描，因黃母信佛，加之黃旭初身份特殊，徐悲鴻首次嘗試了白描觀音這一題材以應(yīng)和黃母心意，而本畫(huà)盡顯悲鴻白描人物功力之深厚。畫(huà)面中的觀音側(cè)身示人，手持楊柳枝，赤足立于蓮臺(tái)之上，衣紋搖曳，身姿動(dòng)態(tài)自然嫻靜，似在聆聽(tīng)世人祈求，面容極有可能借鑒了覃氏原型，眉目間流露出堅(jiān)韌與慈愛(ài)并存的母性氣質(zhì)。白描作品自古至今在美術(shù)史中都是特殊的畫(huà)種，畫(huà)家常在描繪佛教題材時(shí)運(yùn)用白描。對(duì)比歷代觀音畫(huà)像，悲鴻筆下的觀音顯然打破了程序化的開(kāi)臉和姿態(tài)，更具人間氣息。他在畫(huà)作中刻意淡化觀音的宗教屬性，這種“人間觀音”的形象重塑，暗含對(duì)女性力量的致敬，亦是對(duì)封建時(shí)代觀音性別模糊化的反駁。XU BEIHONG PORTRAIT OF AVALOKITESVARAInk on paper, mountedDated 1937Note: Dedicated to Huang Xuchu's mother.Provenance: The client acquired the lot from Huang Xuchu's family.97.5×39.5cmRMB: 800,000－1,200,000
