楊白民比弘一大六歲，二人相識(shí)于弘一初到上海（1898年）之時(shí)，因藝術(shù)、教育和國家情懷而相知，親如手足。據(jù)考，弘一出家時(shí)（1918年）寫給楊白民的信中稱道：余與居士相交垂二十年，今歲余出家修梵行，白民猶沉溺塵網(wǎng)。信中所提相交“二十年”即剛好是弘一初到上海之時(shí)。楊白民在中國近現(xiàn)代教育史上有著重要的地位，是上海城東女學(xué)創(chuàng)始人，弘一也曾任教于此。1903年，楊白民創(chuàng)辦城東女學(xué)。1911年，弘一從東京美術(shù)學(xué)校畢業(yè)后回國。不久就應(yīng)楊白民之請(qǐng)，一邊在《太平洋報(bào)》作編輯，一邊就在楊白民創(chuàng)辦的城東女學(xué)任教，教授國文與藝術(shù)。短短四個(gè)多月，弘一就在《太平洋報(bào)》上發(fā)表了22篇有關(guān)城東女學(xué)的消息。而在此前夕，弘一就已為城東女學(xué)的?？O(shè)計(jì)了封面，并把自己的一篇談藝術(shù)的文章寄交楊白民在?？峡?。書本幅的同年（1923），二人書信亦十分頻繁：5月15日，弘一在上海太平寺致楊白民函；5月23日，在杭州招賢寺致楊白民函，言感謝在滬承推愛護(hù)念等；6月2日，在杭州招賢寺致楊白民函（現(xiàn)藏浙江省博物館）；10月12日，在杭州致楊白民函（現(xiàn)藏浙江省博物館）……諸如此類，不具。值得一提的是，此幅書寫后一年的九月，楊白民逝世。弘一在溫州受到楊白民之女楊雪玖來信得知該消息時(shí)，悲痛萬分，當(dāng)即便回信，道盡心中思念：繞屋長吁，悲痛不已。二十年來老友，當(dāng)以尊翁最為親厚。今展覽《雁蕩山圖》，喜其雄奇翠拔，頗擬寫其形勢郵奉尊翁，約往同游。不意是夕，竟獲哀耗，痛哉！MASTER HONGYI SUTRA IN REGULAR SCRIPTInk on paper, mountedDated 1923Illustrated: Fun with Art: Yang Baimin, the Female Students of Chengdong and Li Shutong, pl. 5, SJPC, 2013Literature: The Chronicles of Li Shutong, the Master Hongyi, p. 374, SJPC, 2021Provenance:The client acquired the lot from the family of Yang Baimin, a friend of Master Hongyi.66×31cmRMB: 600,000－900,000
